In the month of Sravan (July-August) every Monday is a day of fast. On this day Siva, Ganesa, Parvati and Nandi (Siva’s bull body guard) are worshipped.
The women after bath and purification visit the temples and make offering of water, milk, curd, sugar, ghee, honey, sacred red thread, clothes, sacred thread, sandal, roli (mixture of turmeric and lime powder), rice flowers, bel leaves, grass, datura, lotus flowers, beetle leaves, supari (nuts), cloves, cardamom, dry fruits, dhoop (incense) and cash. Arti (adoration by circular movement of lighted lamp) by camphor lighted lamp is done and then hymns are sung.
The devotees take only meal on such days and devote time in listening to the sermons on importance of the day. Lord Siva, when pleased, fulfils the wishes of the devotees.
As Mondays of this month are the day for worship of Siva; the Tuesday of this month are the adoration of Mangla Gauri (one of the nine Durga Shobshi).
This is only for women when the brides must pay homage to their mother in law. The women decorate their hands with mehandi (myrtle). The offering consists of all make up articles used by women.
The fast on third day of every Shukl and Krishna fortnight starting with the beginning of night is called Pardosh Fast. Siva Shankaran Maha Deva is worshipped. There are twenty four such fasts in a year. The beneficial result is the award of children.
