More Details about Festival - Sharad Purnima (Aswin Shukl Purnima)

Also known as Ras Purnima, is the day, when throughout the year, the Moon is of sixteen arts (attributes). This was the day, on which the milk maids, after a dip in the Yamuna and in remembrance of their stolen clothes by Lord Krishna, celebrated Ras Lila.

There should be recitation of Bhagvad Gita, throughout the night, when the devotees observing fast should keep awake. Next day with the breaking of the fast, the oblations offered to the personal God, are distributed to all those who are present. The maidens undertake the fast considering Krishna as their consort.

A certain rich man had two daughters. Both of them observed fast on Sharad Purnima. The elder one was strictly religious and observed the fast according to proper rituals. She was very happy and had many sons. The younger one, also observed the fast, but half way. Her children died after birth. Once she got a son, who died. She put that on a small wooden cot, covered him with a cloth, called the elder sister and asked her to sit on that cot. As soon as the elder sister touched the cot, the child starting crying. The younger sister was astonished, admitting that she had requested her elder sister to sit on the cot, so that she could put the blame of child’s death on her, whereas by the very touch of the virtuous elder sister, the child recovered life.

This happened on the Sharad Purnima day and the younger sister started observing the fast in right earnest.
